Herman Melville, author of Moby Dick, once said “To write a mighty novel, you must start with a mighty theme.” For the artists in the group exhibition Our Backyard these mighty themes or subjects are the people and places that surround them everyday….specifically in the South Bend region. This exhibition in the Weikamp Gallery space features plein-air paintings and other works from our permanent collection by David Allen, Dean Porter, L. Clarence Ball, Mark di Suvero, Edward Herrmann, Jack Appleton and James Borden.

Melville goes on to say that “No great and enduring volume can ever be written on the flea, though many there be that have tried it.” The curators of this exhibition respectfully agree to disagree on this part of his quote! What are your places and cultural landmarks that you’d like to immortalize or celebrate through art? We hope you recognize some in this exhibition!
