Theme: Patterns
The South Bend Museum of Art in association with DTSB & the City of South Bend are honored to present the Festival of Banners 2024: Patterns.
Festival of Banners promotes art in the community by bringing art to the public, providing an exciting venue for artists, celebrating community spirit, enhancing the visual environment of downtown streets, and highlighting SBMA’s community involvement. All ages and skill sets are encouraged to enter.
What is a “pattern”?
This year the SBMA is asking our community to expand how we define patterns. Patterns can be a repeating design, a way of visually interpreting data, or echoing of visual elements such as line, shape, color, form and texture. We are excited to see how our community interprets and showcases this year’s theme by asking ourselves – how can I define patterns?, how can I use elements of art in patterns?, what patterns do I come across in my daily routine?, and how do patterns play a role in my community?
All entries must be your own design. Works will be selected based upon creativity and how well the theme, Patterns, is explored and expressed.

SUBMISSION DETAILS:
All designs & entry forms must be submitted to the museum office digitally no later than 5:00 pm, May 06, 2023. Exhibition dates will be announced after judging.

FORMAT:
- digital image or digital photograph of a drawing
- Image Dimensions: 4.25 in wide x 10 in high
- Vertical designs only
- Your design should be considered finished artwork and colored in the manner you intend the larger design to be colored. Simple designs using bold, solid colors are the most effective.
***THIS YEAR, ALL DESIGNS WILL BE PRINTED DIGITALLY BY A LOCAL PRINTER. WE WILL NOT BE PAINTING IN THE STUDIOS THIS SUMMER***
*Remember, the finished accepted designs will be printed on a banner and hung on a street light in DTSB, you want viewers to be able to see the details from 9 -14 feet away.
*Please note not all entries will be accepted. Children should be at least 8 years of age.
*Additionally, designs submitted in the wrong format will not be accepted.
All banners will become the property of SBMA. However, participants can pick up their banners after January 15. Banners will be stored on museum property for only 3 months, after which they will be discarded.
