Biennial 33: Tensile

Exhibition Dates:

First Friday Reception: October 3, 5 – 8 pm

Now in its 33rd iteration, the South Bend Museum of Art’s biennial exhibition showcases the creative innovation of artists working in the Midwest. This year’s artists share what juror Scott Vincent Campbell calls a “sense of tension or tensile strength ….the ability to stretch without breaking,” both conceptually and materially. Whether employing dazzling hyperrealism or less traditional techniques such as stitching, clamping, puncturing, stacking, layering, and scattering, the twelve artists featured stretch materials and subjects to their limits.

Artists: Michael Coppage (Cincinnati, OH); Eli Craven (Lafayette, IN); Nicole Havekost (Rochester, MN); Basil Kincaid (St. Louis, MO); Amelia Mendelsohn (Holland, MI); Diana Noh (Chicago, IL); Ari Norris (Rockford, IL); Mary Porterfield (Chicago, IL); Anna Reed (Chicago, IL); Amanda Smith (Bloomington, IN); Travis Townsend (Lexington, KY); Jackson Wrede (Grand Rapids, MI).
