Shelby Shadwell uses the visual language of internet memes to create large-scale charcoal drawings that comment on various personal and societal anxieties, high and low status, as well as the way we communicate and connect with others through images on social media.

Capture, upload, share, repeat. The side-by-side development of social media platforms and phone cameras has been incredibly mutually beneficial. Both fuel each other’s growth.

The South Bend Museum of Art has collected works of art for over 70 years. Acquisition of several series of prints has allowed us to collect works by nationally known artists and also address socio-political work pertaining to issues of racism, feminism, and tolerance.
