WHIP STITCH: Quilts Are Contemporary Art

Exhibition Dates:

Robert C. Shields American Series Exhibition, Warner Gallery

Exhibition Dates: September 28, 2024 – January 5, 2025

The Robert C. Shields American Series Exhibition WHIP STITCH: Quilts Are Contemporary Art will feature contemporary fiber artists and craftspeople who use the quilt-making process and the quilt-form towards a variety of conceptual ends: social justice advocacy and activism; socio-political commentary; an expression of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ identities; as a reconciliation and restorative practice; and a means to create physical connection and comfort in a techno-infused society and culture. Exhibiting artists include:

  • Julie Farver
  • Zak Foster
  • Helen Geglio
  • Luke Haynes & Nicole Leth
  • Jenny Hurth
  • Ai Kijima
  • Amanda Nadig
  • Heidi Parkes
  • Angee Turner
  • Sherri Lynn Wood

Quilts cross socio-political, cultural, racial, gendered, and generational boundaries. Quilts tell stories about their communities, their makers, and have rich lives as objects. Quilts are a conduit to shared stories and experiences that are extraordinary as well as everyday, ordinary experiences. This exhibition is intended to bring people together from numerous walks of life around an object that has story-telling and collective power with the potential to transcend societal differences.

First Friday Reception: October 4, 2024 from 5:00 – 8:00 pm
