29 pioneering artists: 80 years of published science fiction!
These science fiction, adventure and fantasy illustrations appeared on the covers of timeless novels such as the Tarzan series by Edgar Rice Burroughs and classic pulp magazines from the 1930s through 1960s, such as Amazing Stories, Weird Tales, Fantastic Adventures, and Wonder Stories. Cover artwork for hardcover and paperback books by Robert E. Howard, L. Ron Hubbard, and Robert Heinlein among other authors are also featured.
For the first time Roy Krenkel’s Land of Hidden Men and Franklin Booth’s Hymn on Christ’s Nativity will be on display!
The Korshak Collection: Illustrations of Imaginative Literature exhibition is organized by Stephen Korshak and Lauren Stump.
Stephen Korshak
As a young man I was fortunate enough to grow up with great art in my bedroom. My father, Erle Korshak, was the publisher of a pioneering science fiction book company, Shasta Publishers. Shasta ushered in the transition of important science fiction literature from magazines printed on cheap pulp paper to hardcover, library-quality books. Much of that art lived with us at our house and at the company office in Chicago.
In particular, the J. Allen St. John illustration for the 1941 Amazing Stories magazine cover of John Carter battling the Dead in “The City of Mummies” lured me into a fantastic world that I never knew existed. So began a lifelong love affair with illustration art.
This collection is a vision of the fantastic. It is one of great illustrators, as well as illustrations that had a great influence on imaginative literature. We hope that you will, as much as we have, learn not only about a whole new field but also a lot about yourself.

Lauren Stump
I’ve worked with the Korshak family for over 5 years, managing the collections and facilitating their various exhibitions. I operate from a small restoration studio in Orlando, FL and am an accredited appraiser through the International Society of Appraisers. I enjoy everything about the collecting process, from consulting on acquisitions to the various behind-the-scenes roles that ensure the proper care and preservation of the artwork.
