First Friday Reception: “Whip Stitch: Quilts Are Contemporary Art” and “Old & Bold: Vivid 19th and 20th Century Quilts”

Join us Friday, October 4 from  5 – 8 PM, for the opening reception of Robert C. Sheild’s American Series WHIP STITCH: Quilts Are Contemporary Art  and the historical quilt exhibition Old & Bold: Vivid 19th and 20th Century Quilts from the Shein Collection. The evening celebrates the depth of quilting as a medium, with exhibiting artists and the curators in attendance. As well as a community quilting activity for all ages; in our printmaking studio.

WHIP STITCH: Quilts are Contemporary Art, is a group exhibition of fiber artists who use the quilt-form towards a variety of conceptual ends: social justice advocacy and activism: socio-political commentary; an expression of BIPOC and LGBTQ+ identities; as a restorative practice and to create physical connection to society and culture. Exhibiting artists are Zak Foster, Sherri Lynn Wood, Ai Kijima, Amanda Nadig, Jenny Hurth, Angee Turner, Luke Haynes, Nicole Leth, Heidi Parkes, Helen Geglio, and Julie Farver. Learn More

Old & Bold: Vivid 19th and 20th Century Quilts from the Shein Collection features a selection of 19th and 20th-century quilts from the prvate collection of SBMA Board Member Cari Shein. This exhibition compliments the contemporary quilts in “Whip Stitch: Quilts are Contemporary Art”, offering visitors a rich exploration of the evolution of quilt-making across centuries. Family Day Activity in the SBMA’s new Printmaking Studio! Create a community quilt with us! Kids and adults can experiment with fabric printing and make a quilt block that will be used for a community quilt in the SBMA’s Printmaking Studio.
