How Are You? No, Really…How Are You? is a fully immersive audio and visual presentation of artist Eli Kahn’s most recent album. Kahn’s instrumental debut solo album How Are You? No, Really…How Are You?, written & recorded in his home studio during the pandemic, was released in May 2021. The record is intended to help listeners relax and increase mindful presence during these trying times. This exhibition will include an immersive mix by Eric Friedlander (Acoustic Research Systems, Los Angeles, CA) along with video work by Kahn, created in collaboration with videographer Bryan Lewis. This exhibition is Kahn’s first solo museum exhibition.
Eli Kahn is a guitarist, producer & improviser from South Bend, IN. After graduating from Indiana University South Bend in 2010 with degrees in both classical guitar performance & music theory, he transitioned into the jazz world, quickly discovering his love for improvisation. Having spent over a decade performing with various ensembles (ranging from modern jazz to neo-soul to hip-hop to ambient to experimental music), he has developed his own distinct style by live looping with a custom-built, seven-string hybrid guitar, allowing him to fill the roles of multiple instrumentalists all at once.
In addition to performing live, he creates immersive speaker and art installations, starting with the collaborative project STRT/SLCT (with St. Mary’s College professor Krista Hoefle) at The Birdsell Project in South Bend (2018), and Treefort Music Fest in Boise, ID (2019). More recently, Kahn created a permanent, quadraphonic soundscape installation entitled Portal to a Better Dimension in South Bend’s Pier Park — the park rehabilitation effort was commissioned by the city’s Venues, Parks & Arts department & the collaborative project (with visual artist GIIIVENS) received a substantial grant from the Indiana Arts Commission. He also was the runner-up for ArtPrize 2021’s Time-based Installation category for his collaborative immersive audio composition/installation (In My Dreams We) Levitate, which was mixed by Eric Friedlander.
