The word “beyond” implies a normal limit to which there is more. There is always more — more to know, more to see, more to explore. It’s the curiosity to go beyond that is an essential trait of what it is to be human.

Whether it’s exploring the universe or life itself, the main characters in these two works reflect this urge to explore. Artists Evan Mann and Julia Oldham utilize items at hand — pen and ink, q-tips, shaving cream, etc., to create works that imagine the beyond — showing us the power of art to take us on a journey beyond the edge of the map. Beyond the known.

Evan Mann is a filmmaker who owns and operates a Denver-based, mixed media, commercial video production company called Otherworldly Productions with his wife, Deborah. Through this company Mann produces digital advertising media, shoots music videos and makes short experimental films. His videos and short films have received numerous Vimeo “Staff Pick” recognitions and been screened at the Chicago International Film Festival, the Seattle International Film Festival, the Independent Film Festival Boston, and more. Mann graduated from the Rhode Island School of Design in 2012 with a degree in printmaking. Mann is a father of three and a husband of one. He lives on a strict diet of peanut butter, sawdust, and birdseed. He believes that if business and art are hats, both need to be worn simultaneously. He believes you should never write a serious bio, because the world has enough already.

Julia Oldham’s work expresses moments of hope in a world on the edge of environmental collapse. Working in a range of media including video, animation and photography, she explores potential in places where human civilization and nature have collided uneasily. Selected exhibitions include Art in General in New York, NY; the Northwest Film Center at the Portland Art Museum, Portland, OR; The Queens Museum of Art in Queens, NY; The Museum of Contemporary Art in Chicago, IL; MoMA PS1 in Long Island City, NY; and the Peabody Essex Museum in Salem, MA. She is currently an artist in residence at the New York City Urban Field Station, where she is working on a project about urban wilderness called “Undiscovered City.” Born in 1979 in Frederick, MD, Oldham currently lives and works in Eugene, OR and Queens, NY.  She received her MFA from the University of Chicago in 2005.
