Can a monument be a form for resistance? Can it celebrate ordinary people rather than state power? Allison Baker’s large concrete sculptures reimagine monuments through the lens of the aspirations and struggles of the American working class and working poor. Incorporating everyday, affordable materials along with the visual language of post-World War II Eastern Europe, Baker’s new body of work explores the complexities of class, labor, and social mobility in America today.
