COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus

Temporary Closure of South Bend Museum of Art is Being Extended Through May 1, 2020

The health and safety of the Museum’s visitors, staff, and volunteers is our top priority. SBMA is closely monitoring the latest developments regarding the COVID-19 Novel Coronavirus outbreak and following the direction of our city and state health officials (, and the Centers for Disease Control ( . We will continue to follow their expert advice as we review all gallery operations, classes, events, and other activities.

In keeping with the Governor’s decision to reopen Indiana schools on May 1, SBMA is changing its reopening date from April 15 to May 1. This includes classes and galleries.

In addition to the galleries being closed, the following is a list of classes and events that have been cancelled or postponed:

  • All art studios are closed until Friday, May 1.
  • Spring art classes have been postponed. The 8 week session will begin Monday, May 4.
  • Open studio classroom time is postponed until Monday, May 4.
  • Workshop and artist reception with Chris Francis on Saturday, April 4, has been cancelled.
  • Artist Reception and Donor Reception on Friday, May 1, are postponed until June (date tbd).
  • Monday night yoga is postponed until Monday, May 4.
  • TEENFORUM: Open Crit on Thursday, April 16, has been postponed.
  • Art League Luncheon scheduled for Tuesday, April 21, has been cancelled.
  • An Ekphrastic Event for Sharing the Muse, Friday, April 24 has been postponed.

For students who are currently enrolled in Spring classes, a credit will be applied to your account at the museum for later use. For questions or concerns, please reach out to Casey Smallwood at
