Continuing Metalsmithing Evenings: Jewelry (8 Weeks) 5:30-9:30PM

Continuing Metalsmithing:  Exploring Alexander Calder

Begins March 16, 2020 and meets once a week for 8 weeks.

Instructor: Karen Snyder

Evening Section: Tuesdays: 5:30-9:30 pm **please note this class runs for 4 hours a week instead of 3.**

In addition to Calder’s well known mobile sculptures he also made about 1500 different types of jewelry— brooches, necklaces, earrings, bracelets—using rivets, an anvil and wire. He mostly gave away his work and made each piece with the thought of that person. We will explore designing similar pieces using riveting and forging techniques to create something influenced by his work. Small pieces of glass or broken ceramics may be included. The photos shown are examples of his work. They are bold and expressive but carefully thought out.

The student should plan to research, draw and calculate the amount of metal needed and be able to predict the techniques needed to complete the piece.

Beginning class is required.  Please bring a sketch pad, tracing paper, graph paper, pencils, tools for metals that you may have.

Tuition includes fuel for torches, solder, flux, and pickling. Metal is additional.

Member Tuition: $176 To receive your member discount, enter the code mbr20off in the discount field on the Art Cart or Checkout page. Non-Member: $220
