This course intends to provide an overview of intellectual modalities to enable artists and art enthusiasts to think critically about art and develop their own philosophical approaches to their work. We will address critical and philosophical questions such as:
What is beauty?
How can we “read” pictures?
How do we talk about symbolism?
Is Freud still relevant?
Can art be universally pleasing?
This course’s style of instruction will combine informative presentations and reading discussions. The reading load will not exceed 60 pages per week. There will be no required papers, but those who are interested in art writing may ask for prompts and feedback from the instructor.
