Teen Summer Art Camps

We are so excited to offer these education camps for teens to experience some of our unique studio spaces, meet great instructors and explore different media!!!

Encaustics: The Art of Beeswax June 11-15
Instructor:  Diane Reader Dorn

Diane Reader Dorn has been an instructor at the museum since 2015 but is far from new to the art community. Painting a raw surface of birchwood from a palette of molten beeswax captivates her and she is excited to share her enthusiasm for the ancient art of encaustic painting with you!! Join her this summer to explore this fascinating medium.

Metalcraft: Small Metals:  June 11-15 & June 18-22
Instructor:  Brian “Huts” Hutsebout

Brian “Huts” Hutsebout joins us this summer in our jewelry/metal studio. Huts works with metal, wood, and found objects in his sculptural pieces and brings that creative inspiration into the classroom. He has over 10 years of experience in youth and adult education and completed his M.F.A in Applied Craft and Design from the Pacific Northwest College of Art in 2014.

Ceramics:  June 11-15 & June 18-22

Instructor:  Megan Archer

Megan Archer is a native of South Bend. She has been teaching ceramics at the museum since 2014 and is also the Kiln Technician. She has her art degree from Saint Mary’s College with a concentration in sculpture and ceramics. Megan says, “teaching others and helping them discover a love of learning and working with their hands has also been a passion of mine for a long time.”

Film Throwback:  Dark Room Photography:  June 11-15
Instructor:  Krista Kuskye

Krista Kuskye has spent the past 11 years dedicated to photography. She earned her B.F.A. from Indiana University South Bend in 2011. Kuskye has exhibited her fine art work locally and overseas as well as having numerous photographs in personal collections.  An adult dark room student says, “Krista is a wonderful, nurturing,and dedicated teacher. She cares about each student and makes you feel your mistakes are actually wonderful  accomplishments.”

Weaving/Fibers:  June 11-15

Instructor:  Kristen Elkington

Kristen Elkington has worked with fiber since 1997. Kristen brings her experience to the museum from being a student of weaving for several years.  She also teaches classes on knitting, weaving, and spinning. Kristen is currently working on starting a new career as a math teacher.  But her passion and joy for weaving remain infectious!

Printmaking:  June 18-22
Instructor:  Lisa Helmholdt

Lisa Helmholdt has loved making art since her finger painting days. She earned her art degree from Saint Mary’s College. 

Lisa spent 7 years teaching art at Goshen High School in a variety of media and has taught summer classes at the South Bend Museum of Art for the past 4 years. Printmaking was one of her specialties at Goshen and she is very excited to share this summer with you!

Surreal Dreamscapes: Mixed Media:  June 18-22
Instructor:  Aubrey Hittle

Aubrey Hittle has won our Festival of Banners juried program for the past three years in the adult category. Aubrey comes from an artistic family of musicians, photographers, painters and wood workers. This has cultivated her love and talent for art.  

She currently teaches at the museum in our youth department offering our Mixed Media and Making Masters class.
