Festival of Banners

Festival of Banners

Now in its thirteenth year, the Festival of Banners promotes art in the community by bringing art to the public, and providing an excellent venue for artists of all ages and skill sets.

This year’s theme, Women: Now & Then comes nearly half a century after the founding of the Women’s Movement in the United States. Women have played a huge role in the creation of our everyday lives. This year’s theme calls for reflection on the women who have shaped our lives personally or in their service to society, through history, literature, science, art, and even what women will do far into the future. Women we all know, and the women we have yet to consider are all at your fingertips. Dive into your creative mind, and send us your portrait of a woman deserves a spotlight.

We are so proud to announce that this year’s Festival of Banners jurors are representatives from the Indiana Women’s Caucus for Art, Angela Michielutti is a graphic designer and teaches at IVY Tech and Mary Ann Butkovich is a painter and printmaker and a former SBMA Board Member.

Three age categories–youth, teen, and adult–allow fun for all. Designs are submitted small scale on paper. Jurors select designs based on creative interpretation of the theme, and use of color, pattern and line; the artists are then invited to paint their design on a 2 x 4 ft banner in the SBMA painting studios during the months of June and July.

(Submissions for 2020 are no longer being accepted.)

Jurors’ Choice Awards are designated for three categories: youth, teen and adult:

1st Place: $100 cash, 1 year SBMA membership, 1 free art class
2nd Place: $50 gift card,1 year SBMA membership, 1 free art class
3rd Place: $25 gift card, 1 year SBMA membership, 1 free art class
